AEO Skinny Skinny – Brilliant Marketing?

| April 2, 2013 | 0 Comments

In honor of April 1st, I felt it only appropriate to comment on the hilarious Skinny Skinny jean “fakeout” campaign created by American Eagle Outfitters.

Skinny jeans are a “must-have” these days , and it seems the tighter they are the better they feel. AEO Vice President of Brand Marketing, Bob Holobinko, cleverly generated brand attention by highlighting this fashion craze in a spoof commercial. At first glance, the video seems like any other American Eagle lifestyle ad… but halfway through you might notice the Skinny Skinny leaves little to the imagination. That’s right, these jeans are spray-painted on.

American Eagle posted the video to its blog and on its YouTube channel with links to a fake product page on their site selling the Skinny Skinny Jeans spray paint.

Of course the spray paint isn’t actually for sale. If a customer does try add it to their bag and checkout, they receive an “out of stock” message and are prompted to enter their email addresses to receive a special offer.

As you can imagine, the video has gone viral with well over a million hits and counting.

The AEO Skinny Skinny campaign seems like a brilliant marketing move to me.  It not only showcases AE’s sense of humor, but it creates a positive brand buzz, gets people visiting the site,  generates revenue for the company and captures useful contact information from their targeted consumer demographic.

Go visit the AE Youtube channel and check out more Skinny Skinny April Fool’s videos!

And because I simply can’t resist, another TIGHT PANTS MUST-SEE!!!
